Scope: This is a complementary health, nutrition and lifestyle service, separate from NHS and private GP care. It is not intended for urgent problems, medical diagnosis, prescription-only prescribing or medication changes.
Why people come

You may have had plenty of tests, advice and appointments—but still no coherent explanation.

People often use Functional Medicine when they want more time to explore the wider context around their health. The focus here is on patterns, modifiable lifestyle factors and practical priorities alongside—not instead of—their usual medical care.

01

Persistent symptoms

Fatigue, digestive symptoms, pain, poor recovery, metabolic problems, sleep disruption or symptoms that seem to overlap.

02

Complex health history

Several diagnoses, medications, lifestyle factors or investigations that have been considered separately rather than as one picture.

03

Health optimisation

You are broadly well but want a more rigorous way to improve metabolic health, resilience, body composition and long-term healthspan.

The value of an hour

Complex health stories rarely fit into short appointments.

A 60-minute consultation gives us time to understand the sequence of events, separate the important from the incidental, and decide which few things are actually worth working on.

The aim is not to produce the longest possible plan. It is to leave with a clearer understanding of your priorities and a practical starting point.

Space to think

Less noise. Better priorities.

The aim is not to turn health into a full-time project. It is to identify a small number of useful changes, understand why they matter, and build enough confidence to manage more of your own health well.

The difference

Systems thinking, without losing medical context.

The useful part of Functional Medicine is not simply adding more tests or supplements. It is taking time to examine context, ask better questions and decide which modifiable lifestyle factors are worth acting on.

I do not promise cures or quick fixes. Where evidence is strong, I will say so. Where it is uncertain or evolving, I will say that too.
  • Review the timeline rather than treating each symptom in isolation
  • Use diagnoses and results already provided by your medical team as useful context
  • Prioritise nutrition, sleep, movement, stress physiology and metabolic health
  • Identify when a question is better taken back to your NHS GP or an appropriate regulated medical service
  • Keep plans practical enough to live with
  • Build understanding and self-management rather than dependence on repeated appointments
Optional testing

Use testing for information—not for its own sake.

Existing NHS or private results are usually the best place to start. If additional health-optimisation information may be useful, we can discuss the types of markers or independent tests that could add context.

Independent providers

Any additional testing is arranged directly by you with an independent laboratory or testing provider. This Functional Medicine service does not provide phlebotomy or diagnostic screening.

Results can then be discussed for nutrition, lifestyle and health-optimisation context. Findings that need medical investigation, diagnosis or treatment should be taken to your NHS GP, specialist or another appropriate medical service.

Your first consultation

One hour to make sense of the wider picture before deciding what to change.

Before

Bring any existing results you already have, your medication and supplement list, a brief health timeline and the questions you most want to explore.

During

We map the wider health picture, identify modifiable factors and agree realistic priorities around nutrition, sleep, movement, recovery and other lifestyle domains.

After

You receive a personalised lifestyle plan. Follow-up is used to review what has been practical or useful, simplify where needed and agree the next stage.

Questions

Before you book

Does functional medicine replace my GP or specialist?

No. It should complement appropriate conventional care. Urgent symptoms, screening, emergency care and specialist treatment remain important.

Will I need lots of private tests?

No. Existing results are the starting point. If additional information could be useful for health optimisation, you can arrange testing independently with an external provider. Testing is optional and should have a clear reason for being considered.

Is this mainly supplements?

No. The foundation is usually food, sleep, activity, stress physiology, habits and metabolic health. Supplements can be useful, but should have a defined role rather than becoming the plan itself.

Can I have a consultation remotely?

Yes. 60-minute and follow-up consultations are available by Zoom as well as in person in York.

Not sure whether to start in person or on Zoom?

The consultation format is the same. Choose whichever makes it easier to give the conversation your full attention.
